Comparing gel vs acrylic nails starts with the appointment you need. A gel manicure, an overlay and a set of extensions can appear beside each other on a nail menu; each reserves a different service. Start with whether you want colour on your own nails or added length, then check the product and removal options with the salon.
Gel polish, overlays and extensions
Gel polish is a colour service cured under a lamp. A gel polish manicure does not, by itself, mean you are getting longer nails. An overlay adds product over the natural nail; an extension adds length. Ask which appointment the salon uses for the result in your reference photo.
Acrylic enhancements use a liquid and powder mixture that hardens after application. Sculpting gel is applied and cured under a lamp. The word “gel” on a booking menu still needs context: gel polish, a sculpted enhancement and a full-cover gel tip are different appointments.
What London nail menus actually charge
Nu Nails & Spa lists a regular manicure at $30 and a Shellac manicure at $40. Its acrylic full set is $55, compared with $45 for a fill. Nail extensions include Shellac, with possible extra charges for length. These are separate menu entries, so booking a manicure when you want an acrylic set would reserve the wrong service.
At WE Nails & Spa, the menu separates a $39 Shellac manicure from a $59 acrylic full set and a $59 Gel-X full set. It also lists gel polish removal at $10 and Bio Gel or acrylic removal at $20. Existing product can therefore change both the booking and the bill.

What to tell the salon
- Say what is on your nails now, including the product if you know it and whether another salon applied it.
- Send a photo showing your desired length and design. Ask whether the quote covers every nail or charges for individual details.
- Ask whether you need a new set, a fill or removal and a fresh application. Let the technician assess existing work.
- Check the price and booking time for maintenance as well as the first appointment.
Can I book a polish change instead of a manicure?
Check the inclusions. WE Nails lists polish changes separately from manicures. If you also want cuticle work and shaping, ask for the appointment that includes them. A lower polish-change price does not describe the same amount of work.
Do I need removal booked separately?
Tell the salon about existing product when you book, even if you are choosing the same colour again. Ask whether removal is included, an add-on or a separate time slot. Keep the confirmation so the technician knows what you requested.
